What is a good configuration for a web development server for local network?

We are about to buy a development server for our team Web Developer – PHP and Javascript programmers. We are planning on running LAMP and Subversion. What is the best hardware (processor, memory, manufacturer) and software (Linux version, configuration, etc) settings? And what is the best way to network with a team of 4 Windows machines?

It really depends your budget. "Best" hardware is, in my opinion, the largest capacity and fastest you can reasonably afford. For this type of server, I would with more RAM on a faster processor, faster and bigger / hard drives seem possible. I'm partial to Slackware Linux, because it is free and very stable. If you are using Subversion, then just regular old TCP / IP should be sufficient, but you could easily configure Samba for Windows if you share elected. The level of your question indicates that it is not particularly comfortable doing this myself, so it is likely that the value of your money to pay a consultant to help you make these decisions and get it all installed and working. That gives you additional safety net to have someone available to help if things go sideways.
